Inside Battle Slots: Character Artist Michael Myers
Mar 7th, 2011
Posted By Emma Peterson
Hello everyone! My name is Michael Myers (no, not that one), and I am one of the character artists on Battle Slots. The character design and art team consists of two artists, Dale Santoiemma and myself. The initial character designs and concepts were created by Dale, and the artwork was then handed off to me for a “beautifying” process. Here’s a visual example of that process:

Step 1: This is Dale’s initial design, complete with line work and a color scheme for the creature. Dale has a knack for illustrating creatures, and really set the tone for the characters with his designs. With this solid foundation, it was fairly easy for me to go to the next step:

Step 2: Here’s the final image. Using a Wacom tablet and Photoshop, I began painting over Dale’s initial artwork, rendering the forms in more detail and giving it a final polish to be used in-game.
All of the artwork was created digitally in Photoshop, using a Wacom Intuos 4 Tablet. This made the process easier in terms of making revisions and slight alterations to the artwork.
I’ve been working digitally for almost 10 years now, so this was definitely a comfortable way of working. This process is now considered to be an industry norm.
I had a hand in the artwork for all of the characters, NPCs, allies and monsters you see in the game. As you can imagine, that was a lot of work. The game boasts over 100 creatures, allowing for a really deep play experience.
Working on Battle Slots has been one of my favorite experiences since starting at Phantom EFX in early 2008. Being a long time RPG fanatic, I was thrilled to find out we would be creating a game with such strong RPG and fantasy elements throughout. The whole team did an outstanding job, from initial design to finished product, and I really believe you guys are gonna enjoy the game from beginning to end.
